“Planning for the future departure of an executive director is often the elephant in the board room – the board is afraid of offending the executive director; the ED doesn’t bring it up for fear that the board will think he/she is dissatisfied and plans on leaving. The result is that the critical key to any organization’s sustainability is jeopardized.

Instead of viewing founder and ED succession planning with discomfort, it should be a structured process that ensures key leadership continuity, with a goal of both retaining knowledge and developing new capacity and strength.

It may include developing internal candidates or seeking new leadership externally, but regardless of the source of the new leader, there are steps that can be taken to identify the specific skills and qualities needed and also the resolution of existing obstacles that will impede the success of any new leader.

This class will look at the three kinds of succession planning: the process that should be in place in anticipation of the planned retirement or permanent departure of the existing executive director; emergency planning for the possible sudden departure or termination and future leadership development to promote talent from within.
